The Delicacy of Rock-and-Roll is a collection of new work by American artist/musician Douglas Burns. Although his bands RED DONS and The Observers have toured the continent several times, this exhibition is the debut of Burns' visual art practice in Europe. Unlike these music endeavors, humor and self deprecation take a more prominent roll in the paintings, collages, and video featured in the show. Themes of identity and alienation within mass culture remain and systems of power continue to be challenged. The opening is February 15th and will feature a rare performance by The Revisions, an acoustic side project of the Red Dons.
“Jazz presumes that it would be nice if the four of us –simpatico dudes that we are- while playing this complicated song together might somehow free and autonomous as well. Tragically, this never quite works out… Rock-and-Roll, on the other hand, presumes that us – as damaged anti-social as we are – might possibly get it to-fucking-gether man, and play this simple song. And play it right, okay? Just this once, in tune and on the beat. But we can’t. The song’s too simple, and we’re too complicated and too excited.” - Dave Hickey, The Delicacy of Rock-and-Roll
